Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi announced that the Election Commission is discussing various logistical issues to make voting rights practical for NRIs.

Various issues such as whether the voting could be postal or if voter presence is necessary are to be sorted out since the government is in favour of giving voting rights to NRIs and discussions have also been had with the ministry of overseas Indian affairs and other departments.

Commissioner Quraishi also said the poll panel is considering proposals for transforming the voter ID cards into bio-metric ones.

Among other concerns is the security situation that will be factored in detail before deciding the number of phases the polls should be conducted.
