New Delhi,
Oct 15: The struggle of a woman
to get a marriage certificate
from the authorities came to
an end with the Delhi High Court
directing the city government
to issue the document to her
at the earliest.
Charanjeet Kaur Nagi, who was
allegedly denied the marriage
certificate by the issuing authority
as her husband Jaspal Singh
is settled abroad and could
not appear before the competent
officer, approached the Court
in early July this year.
Justice Ravinder Bhat, however,
in a recent order directed Singh,
based in the United States,
to fill the marriage registration
form with the attestation of
the Counsel General available
in the nearest town and send
the form to the Marriage Registrar.
He was also asked by the Court
to give the detailed description
of his passport besides an attested
copy of his photograph.
At the same time, the Court
asked the petitioner to file
an attested copy of her and
Singh’s passport along
with the registration form before
the Marriage Registrar.
The Court further asked the
woman to be present before the
issuing officer along with a
witness at the time of getting
the certificate as per the Hindu
Marriage Act.
According to the petitioner,
their marriage took place at
a Gurudwara here in 1991.
In 1996, Singh left for the
US after he got a job there,
she said, adding the US authorities
issued green card to her husband
in 2004.She along with her minor
son have applied for visa with
the US Embassy early this year
as they were planning to visit
him.
The petitioner has alleged that
the Sub-registrar refused to
accept the certificate issued
by a Gurudwara which solemnised
the marriage as per Sikh rituals
